Music could be something very beautiful to relax our feeling through time. Music could be something to express the feeling toward a specific moment. And music is truly something to draw up your joyous and pain at the same time depends on situation.

When I was young, music was just a fun stuff to shout along with. Growing a bit older I learn to catch the meaning of those love songs, and only after a while I learn to feel it when life turns out to be nothing diferent from the song and drama. And now, I sang a song to express my heart to someone. Some people may think it’s cool, some may laugh and says it’s a waste or stupid but I don’t care. I only need to follow my feeling.

Love could turn your world upside down. It’s a mix cocktail; it’s sweet, sour, spicy, salty and bitter and could really get you drunk and out of control. Every taste is in and still people are addicted to it.

Well, here is my first song ever with a video of me. Perhaps only for those who went through the feeling of that kind of one-side-effected love could feel that song well. It is true that loving someone is hard and it’s hurt that you love that one alone; it’s even a severe pain that your effort was ignored and you got blamed for what you’re trying to show because that one will never ever be able to treasure your heart. But no matter how your hearted was broken, it’s amazing that you still love that one with all the pieces. I already give away my heart and I don’t really know how to catch it back. So, what left of me is to let time tells everything. All I know is I could sing any song just to ask him to stay. I could drop every tears just to let the sadness away and I could just turn back always no matter what happened.

Here’s the song! The title is “Please share your heart”. It was a song by Nop Payarith that was released many years ago.Enjoy ….

No matter what life holds, the wheel is in your hand. But how to control it when the hand is too numb to turn over? There are time I walk and run but then I fall. It hurts and it damn hurts when there seems no way to go, no strength to stand up and no even one single reason to move on. I know clearly, everyone experiences that and I’m just in a very first step of learning it. It’s tough, I admit it damn tough!

Maybe I follow too much of my feeling that I forgot the definition of Right and Wrong. And, the biggest mistake of all is that I isolate myself from the world. I have just learned that I haven’t lost the world, but the world lost me because I didn’t walk into it.

Whoah!… Sometimes, I need time on my own just to think over and over again what do I need to do for life, but well, I’m a loser. I hardly can bare my time standing on my own because it’s already been too much to have no one to share the laughter and the tears.

Time’s up! No more excuse please Pech! U know well enough what future hold for you. All you need to do is just to be strong and believe in yourself. Just a single smile, a single sweet care and a single tiny believe may bless my time and it all starts from the girl in my mirror before I need it from others:) … “There can be miracle when you believe”…. but still I wish my white horse prince would appears somewhere that I don’t need to run and find him ^^

12:41 AM

A hard wind blows the red leafs all over the ways, the tree that used to be green with its leaf turn to be grey in the colour of the wood as if it is dying; these are the sign of the end of summer and a welcome of autumn. A shiny day light pass by so fast, so the 3months of summer become just a past now. No more nice warm weather, no more hard sunlight, no more nice summer dress. It is time that I have to be ready for the up-coming autumn and winter.

This must be the very first time in my life to see such a huge change of view through the changes of season. I had enjoy so much nice time sightseeing all the colourful plants, flowers and trees everywhere, but it was just for a short period of time. Autumn changes everything. It kills all the tree leafs and lets the wind blows it far and far away until it becomes just a dust.

Changes of season is nothing different from the changes of life. Before, I were just a little girl living under my parent control, doing things they told me to, learning, saying and thinking things that I was taught. To me, it was like a summer time that is now all gone. To be overprotected made me feeling down sometimes, but since I am far away home, now, I understand more. It is much better to have somebody watching over me, taking care of me and always stand by me no matter what happen. I hate being alone out here; I feel like a red leaf that is blowing away too far from the tree, however, I just hope that I won’t end up as a dust like that red leaf.

Although my family life is not a perfect one that other people want to live in, I still love it so bad. It’s my life; who cares?

Wandering into the pages of my life, it reflects my past so far that in my dictionary life means dream. There were too many dreams that made me stuck into it. There were time that imagination are much happier than reality. There were place that I dreamt of but I have never been. There were moment that I’m wishing from all my heart to be happen but I have never seen.

Still, things doesn’t change much. It’s been 20 years of living, 20 years of learning and 20years of being me, I didn’t seem to get out of the dream so much. I try to face but I still fall. With only little hope in mind I am just trying to figure out the best way to solve everything. But is it possible to solve things that you didn’t cause it? Though it affects much of my life. I know I think too much, too much that this 3kg brain can contain no more.

Daily horoscope
Some people say you never know what’s in store for the day ahead. But if you start your day by reading your star sign you will be ready for anything that goes around or comes around. It might sounds a bit superstitious. However, after waking up with a blank mind it is encouraging to leave the house with some clue of what is waiting for you. There is very little risk in putting stock in horoscopes, since even an unlucky fortune usually tells you to be prepared to face the day, which isn’t bad advice to start with. You can find horoscopes all over the net, but Facebook is my choice since I check my page twice a day anyway.

Give yourself a gift
It is not surprising that you only think of giving gifts to others, but why not be truly independent by giving one to yourself? I knew someone who had recently been struggling to attract attention, obviously hoping that someone would give them a gift to lift them out of their troubles. But all she had to do was give herself a gift to turn things around. A happy gift is a blessed thing. So, the first gift you should give yourself is a smile at the person you see in the mirror. Trust me; it’s not a stupid thing to do. Smiling just makes you feel different. Start and end you day with a smile on your face and you will never need someone else to make you feel happy.

Street food
Some of our preferences might be changing, but street food is still the top choice for Phnom Penh teens with an empty stomach. It might not be as famous or trendy as the food you can get at the mall. Yet, nothing satiates my stomach like the uniquely Cambodian offerings cooked up by the Kingdom’s many street vendors. Now an unprecedented five cool meals within five cool things. 1: Roasted eggs at the corner of Wat Sarawan 2. Spicy papaya salad nearby the Ministry of Environment 3. Snow cones behind Norodom Primary school 4. Meatballs in front of the Daun Penh primary school 5. Khmer cake next to Pencil supermarket riverside.

Reading for self-improvement
Reading doesn’t always have to be boring. You just have to figure out what type of book keeps you turning the page. To be honest, I hardly ever read textbooks from school. However, I do enjoy getting lost in books that challenge me to strengthen my mind, improve my general knowledge and build my understanding of my life and the world around me. The two books that I’m reading at the moment are “12 steps for life changing power–Dump you hang ups” and “How to sell your way through life”. While everyone else is sticking their face in their cell phone, set yourself apart and kick back with a cool book. It will give you a chance to escape for a few moments, and might change your life forever.

Staying stylish online
No matter how busy you are, finding time to stay in style will add colour to your life. Getting a good look doesn’t need to cost big bucks, but driving from place to place to find the right fashion for your personality can take up too much of your precious time. Save yourself the hassle and search for the perfect style in seconds by going online to check out the newest trends around the world. I suggest bershka.com, limitedtoo.com and asiajam.com, along with many other sites you are sure to stumble upon while style hunting. Once you know what you want, your trips to the mall will be a breeze. If you don’t see what your looking for at Sorya, Sovanna or Pencil, you can buy the perfect fabric at Tuol Tumpong and get a truly unique outfit made in a few days.

Boramey Chan finds out how you can begin to build your professional network now and why it is essential to getting your ideal career started in the future

Working can be difficult, but finding work can sometimes seem impossible. The everyday stresses of the workplace are undeniable, but people trying to break into the job market would be happy to trade the anxiety of unemployment for the demands that come with their chosen profession.

Just about everyone has had to look for work at some point in their life, and it is safe to say that there are few things more frustrating than a prolonged job search. The best way to make yourself an attractive employee is to build up your skills through studying, interning and volunteering. But without a professional network of people in your field, your capacity for greatness will likely go unnoticed.

Networking is a term that refers to many different types of human-to- human interaction. But they all lead to the same thing: a greater ability to get information and support on the way to a more successful career.

You do not have to be a social butterfly or a veteran in your field to build a broad network of professional contacts. Even if you are years away from entering the professional realm, it isn’t too early to make mutually beneficial personal connections that could last until the day you retire.

Just like building your professional skills, networking requires significant time and effort. But the challenge of becoming well connected in your sector shouldn’t be overwhelming.

To make it more manageable we asked career counsellors, industry experts and gainfully employed youth to offer their guidance on how to make your presence known.

The fact is, explained David Symansky, recruitment manager at the employment agency HR Inc, that the larger your professional network is, the more likely you are to succeed.

Whether you are employed or not, the likelihood of being introduced to new opportunities inevitably increases with the number of people you know.

Of course just knowing someone’s name isn’t enough, he added.

You need to reach out and let people know who you are and what you are capable of. Communicating your ideas with confidence is the first step toward gaining respect from potential employers, colleagues and possible future employees.

Networking builds trust, and when people are looking through a stack of CVs that have been submitted by strangers for a job opening, having a familiar face and a positive reputation can make you stand out among the crowd.

Strong professional contacts also make it much easier to get relevant and meaningful recommendations, which are crucial to employers to get a sense of your potential, said Si Len, programme manager for youth employment for social dialogue for the Cambodian Federation of Employers & Business Associations.

“There will be more chances to be selected for a job and the process will move faster than it will for people without [a strong support network.]”

Activities aimed at professional development, such as volunteering, community service or capacity building courses, are all great opportunities to make lasting connections.

But daily interactions can also lead to relationships that carry over into the professional realm.

When it comes to professional networks, bigger is always better, and any opportunity to meet people could be the one that gets you the job you’ve been waiting for. “I tried to participate in many events so that I can meet new people with new things to share,” said Charly Samsokrith, whose enthusiasm for meeting new people paid off when he got a job working with Sabay’s social media team, whose manager knew him through volunteer work at the BarCamp technology conference.

When forming professional contacts, you shouldn’t be selective based on your impression of the people you meet, said Ana Nov, general manger of ANG Khmer Group, because you never know what relationships will be valuable in the future.

“We need the trust of others to get our job done,” explained the young entrepreneur.

This can be gained “through all means of communication, associations or any other opportunities”.

The ability to seize informal opportunities to expand your network of contacts is invaluable. But as the country’s white-collar workforce is expanding there, you should also be sure to take advantage of events designed to bring together people moving the country forward. “Youth and Professional Events”, hosted by CAMFEBA, give students a chance to mingle with the people with whom they will eventually work, and provide a platform to practise the networking skills students will need after graduation.

While establishing contacts in Cambodia is essential, networking with people around the world is increasingly important in today’s global economy. “It’s fun to get to know a lot of people from all over the world,” said Seng Pyseth, an internationally connected student from the Royal University of Law and Economics.

He has become globally connected by capitalising on chances to participate in programmes, including the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in the United States and Sunburst Youth Camp.

It’s not always easy to break the ice in a social setting, and it can be even more difficult if you are mixing with older, more experienced people, but you have nothing to lose by introducing yourself. “Go out and try to meet new people because practice makes perfect,” said Symansky. “The more you network the better you will be at it.”

Vacation is almost over. For some students, this means settling into a whole new university and for others it means continuing their collegiate journey. While most students have at least a vague idea of where they want to be after graduation, many will change their minds about their future before graduation day. Deciding what to study and what direction you want to head in can be an overwhelming choice, but Lift is here to tell you that it’s never too late to change your course and everything will be ok.

Feeling it out during your foundation year
Kim Samoudum, a 17-year-old who recently graduated from American Intercon School in Phnom Penh, will begin his studies at the University of Health and Sciences this year, but, like many Cambodian students, the decision was only partially his. He wasn’t sure what he was interested in, so he followed his father’s advice. “However, before I made my decision, I thought that I will change immediately if I figure out what I want to do,” he said.

Fortunately for Kim Samoudum and many other fresh entrants into Cambodia’s universities, the first year at university can be used as a testing ground before moving on to more serious studies. The first year of university in the Kingdom is known as a the foundation year, and the Ministry of Education demands that universities teach a broad range of courses covering various subjects in order to give students a chance to figure out where they want to focus their academic attention.

André Struve, faculty coordinator of Limkokwing University, said that the foundation year is useful to allow students a chance to orient themselves upon arriving at university and, with the help of counselling, make the best choice for future studies.

Although they do not provide the same career and college counselling services that Limkokwing offers, PonnChhay, vice-rector of Royal University of Phnom Penh, agreed that the foundation year can shape the ideas of RUPP students trying to figure out what they want to do.

The ability of students to switch their major after finishing their foundation year depends on their school, major and scholarship status. Generally, students who switch majors have to complete additional courses to catch up with their classmates. While it might make your academic life more complicated in the short term, changing majors might make your university experience much better.

Late changes
It would be great if everyone made the right choice for their major and loved what they studied, but oftentimes this is not the case. So, what if you made the wrong choice? Should you go back?

Keo Sokethya, a sophomore of Royal University of Law and Economics, decided to give up his studies in economics after she passed the entrance exam to study media and communications at RUPP. “It’s a waste of time doing what I don’t like to do because that choice was forced from my mom before,” he said. “I saw that there were more chances for jobs and, in addition to my interests, I would not regret quitting this major, even after two years of studying, just to reach my life goal.”

Ly Oudom, 25, a junior at Western International University, made his decision to shift from a marketing major to finance and banking because he felt that Cambodia’s banks were being well-developed, so there were more chances for employment. “Spending 2 or 3 years more in academia is not a big deal compared to a lifetime,” he said. “However, in order to shift I have to transfer my credit and repeat one more year.”

While some students have the financial luxury of spending extra time and money on their collegiate careers, many students must stick it out, simply so they can get a degree. Lim Ay Song , a senior at RULE, chose to go on with her major even though she didn’t like it. “The courses were not what I expected,” she said. “I thought of changing my major, however, I cannot, so the only answer was to focus more,” she said. She looked around her and found a way to make her education more interesting and important to today’s job market by enrolling in additional courses in English. “It’s not too late for me to strengthen myself,” she said.

Making postgraduate moves
While it is preferable to know what job you want before you graduate, some students will only come to this realisation upon entering the work force, but there are things you can do while in school to prepare yourself for whatever job you end up doing.

“It is important to give consideration to what interests you. If you are going to spend 3 to 4 years studying a subject, then choose something that you will enjoy,” said Susanna Coghlan, director of training at AAA Cambodia. But she added that there is a big gap between studying a subject and its practical application in the workplace, where deadlines, tight resources, and interpersonal relationships must also be considered. She said that many people don’t find there calling until they enter a professional setting.

“Many people only discover what they enjoy most when they start working and are exposed to different roles and projects,” she said. “If at this point you find you have a passion for a particular field, which will require further training or study, then you can go back to university with the benefit of practical experience and the knowledge of how this role is performed in the workplace.”

While many people will change their field of work at least once during their career span, it’s good to think about the direction you want to move in after university, such as which industries interest you and where you see a chance for future growth, said Coghlan.

Whatever you do, gather as much internship, volunteer and work experience as possible along the way and remember, wherever you end up, you can always find a way to make a change and improve your life.

Economic Today

Sky blue was the color to be seen in Aug. 12 as hundreds of young Cambodians in blue shirts stamped with the Ministry of Education’s logo gathered in Phnom Penh to mark the Ninth International Youth Day.

The unmistakable beige and emerald Cambodian scouts’ uniforms imbued the blue-hued audience with a very appropriate touch of green. With this year’s theme being “Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action,” it seemed only fitting for the young people to be covered in blue and green as they reflected on the need to protect Cambodia’s natural environment from man- made pollutionand the global thirst for energy.

Instituted in 1999 by the UnitedNations, the first International Youth Day was held in 2000, when former United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan said the annual event aims to “make governments more responsive to the aspirations of youth for a better world.”

In Cambodia, International Youth Day has become a forum for youth to speak up to “be part of the solution rather than part of the problem,” as Kofi Annan put it eight years ago.

“I feel it is my privilege to be here with you all today and I congratulate you all on fruitful results of the discussions and new knowledge, skills and friendships that you have just earned,” said Teruo Jinnai, UNESCO Representative in Cambodia, referring to a national youth forum that was held in conjunction with International Youth Day. The forum brought 600 Cambodian youths from different provinces together to discuss this year’s theme— climate change. Successful efforts by world governments to engage youth leave no doubt that the participation of young people in decision-making leads to more effective policies and programs for sustainable socio-cultural and national development, said Teruo Jinnai. Chey Chap, an under-secretary of state for the Ministry of Education, and Director-General Lak Sam Ath pointed out a few of the examples in which youth have collaborated with the Government on education, economy, health, and especially environment issues.

Twenty-year-old Chui Chanthy, a fourth year student at the National University of Management and youth representative at the ceremony, voiced her peers’ commitment to mitigating climate change by changing daily habits. Young Cambodians, she pointed out, understand the value of turning off electric appliances to reduce power consumption, reducing their waste and recycling reusable goods.

Chui Chanthy was a participant of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program—an international youth exchange program in which young people from Japan and ASEAN countries live aboard a boat for 50 days that sails through the participating countries. She encouraged youth not to be shy about participating in social activities such as International Youth Day and any other events that remind them about their responsibility to make their society and the world a better place.

Cambodia is a youthful country, which means today’s young Cambodians will have considerable influence over how the country’s develops, said Chui Chanthy. Guests, speakers and participants of International Youth Day were welcomed with a gracefully executed wishing dance, one of Cambodia’s most famous classical dances. A song performed by a group of young Cambodians, which highlighted duties youth have in society, ASEAN and the world, and a traditional folk dance— Peacock of Pailin Dance—punctuated the morning’s festivities Aug. 12.

The celebration was crowned with the release of multicolored balloons attached with messages on transparent plastic that said, among other slogans: “Protecting the environment is youth’s duty.” In the relaxed atmosphere of the National Institute of Education’s yard, young participants, who listened attentively to the speakers’ messages, let go of their seriousness and let smiles and laughter fill the air. Pin Manika, a participant and a member of the Khmer Youth Social Development organization, was delighted to attend the event. “The dancing shows and the song were great,” she said, “but especially this day gave me the occasion to learn more about youth responsibility and was a chance to meet new people.”

Chan Boramey, 20, says she has high hopes for her communications studies in Romania.

Cambodian students from a variety of backgrounds are to leave to study at universities in eight European countries in August this year.

The 34 students are the first to be offered the chance to study abroad through the European Union’s Erasmus Mundus Mobility with Asia programme (EMMA).

According to Phal Des, EMMA coordinator in Asia and IT dean at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), the programme aims to strengthen and bridge the knowledge gap between Europe and Asia.

“Europe is full of old wise people; Cambodia full of young but inexperienced people, so they need to go and learn from them,” Phal Des said.

“This is part of globalisation – we want to learn from the developed countries a lot.
“These students will come back and become human resources for our country.”

Phal Des added that in Europe, students who qualified for the EMMA program were admired and sought after by many employers.

Looking to the future
Chanthy Somela, 22, is a junior of agriculture at the Royal University of Agriculture and in his third year of Information Technology at RUPP. He finished his bachelor’s degree in forestry in 2008.

He said he found out about the program through friends, Internet and brochures, and felt proud to be one of the Cambodians selected for the program.

“I’m very happy and feel very proud of myself,”Chanthy Somela said.
“I will try more to get my master’s degree in forestry in Europe in a year.

“I am sure I will encounter new experience, thinking, new concepts, and a new environment.
“When I come back, I will help develop my country in the sector of forestry.”

Chan Boramey, 20, will go abroad to study journalism and communication in Romania for one year.
She said she was leaving with a big hope in her heart.

“This is a great chance for Cambodian students to get exposed to a civilised culture, and it will open again for any student who is interested,” she said.

“I am going to make the best out of every moment I have being there.”
Addressing disadvantage

The other international EU scholarship programme was highly prestigious, said Phal Des, and was aimed specifically at Asian students from a disadvantaged but academic background.

The first phase of the program was finished early this year when 112 students from Cambodia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and the Philippines were accepted.

The number of students from Cambodia made up almost one-third of the students from the five countries in the programme.

The students will study in Romania, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Turkey and the Netherlands.

“I am very proud that a lot of Cambodian students have been selected, and this precious opportunity will keep their lives well-equipped,” said Phal Des.

EMMA offers scholarships on undergraduate studies, graduate studies of master’s and doctorate degrees, post-doctorate and research, Phal Des added.

The second phase will happen again in October this year in five different countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia and Myanmar.

EMMA’s contact in Cambodia is Phal Des at RUPP.
